 SKILLED TRADES IS OUR HISTORY
 
 
The end of slavery and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution happened almost coincidentally. African Americans were employed in many skilled trade jobs as they were considered “dirty job.” In the midst of their skilled trade work, African Americans invented products and even received patents for their inventions. Here are some of the lesser known inventions and their patent dates.

Yet today it is difficult to find African Americans within the skilled trades profession. As skilled trades have migrated from dirty jobs to high paying clean jobs, African Americans are non-existent. Richard Florida, author of Rise of the Creative Class summarizes it best, the creative tech industry “looks like the United Nations minus Black faces.” Black students noted in the 2009 Lemelson- MIT study that they are not prepared well by their teachers for creative tech or inventing careers.
 

The myth is that African Americans do not have the capability to matriculate into the Skilled Trades profession. The myth is that they are not math proficient for today’s high tech skilled trades. If only 25% of the American population possess a Bachelor’s degree, meaning that the other 75% of the population must gravitate to the 3 other career paths.

Skilled Trade Apprenticeships are training programs with wages, affectionately termed "HANDS-ON HIGHER EDUCATION". The training is both hands-on and classroom  with reinforcement of the skills on-the-job. Apprenticeships begin with a wage on day 1. Training wages can begin at $12 per hour ($24,000 annually) to $21 per hour ($42,000) much higher than minimum wage.
 
Sadly, women and people of color have been denied EQUAL ADMISSION to these apprenticeships, whether the positions are in construction, manufacturing, IT and healthcare under the guise that women and people of color lack MATH PROFICIENCY.
 
Women and people of color are challenged with Math Anxiety as they were not taught how to apply math concepts in k-12 schools like their male counterparts. This Math Anxiety creates a fear of performance on Math Exams. It can be alleviated with research based techniques.
 
Uplift, Inc. has been at the forefront of training individuals to improve Math and science standardized exam scores with fun hands-on applied lessons and activities. Our success has been chronicled in the About Us page. <
